An application developed by staff from the Learning Innovation Hub (LIH) led by Shamim Joarder and supported by his colleagues has won an Innovation award at the annual 2019 Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ASCILITE) Conference in Singapore.
The award was in recognition of the development of an application titled iLearn Insights which was designed to assist academic staff in understanding levels of student engagement on iLearn units by selecting an appropriate combination of student unit access, assignment on time submission and or achieving above a required grade.
The application provides the collection and analysis of data, reporting functionality and a messaging tool all in the one application. It allows teaching staff to take action immediately and send personalised and targeted messages with personalised content related to the student and unit directly to students. It has been observed that on an average, around 82% of students re-engaged with the unit, 44% submitted their assignment and 35% students completed Academic Integrity Module (AIM) within 48hrs after receiving personalised email.
Shamim says “Even though I came up with the concept of iLearn Insights, this was definitely a team effort with my colleagues Amanda Parker, Jeremy Hind and Michael Mendoza in the Learning Technology Services unit.”
I would encourage all staff to think about the work we do that can benefit yourself personally or the Macquarie University community. – Shamim Joarder
In Semester 2, 2019 there was engagement with the application from over 280 academic staff members and over 16,000 emails being sent to students. Further information on iLearn Insights can be found on the iLearn Quick Guides website.
Any academic staff interested in using iLearn Insights should contact Shamim Joarder, Shamim.Joarder@mq.edu.au for further information.
